BookChat

Kurri Kurri Library

Contact the Library on 4937 1638.

A fantastic group that has been meeting since 2006.

Books and Bubbles at Cessnock Library

Similar to Book Chat, only with a set book each month, it's held in the evening and with a glass of bubbly - All Welcome!

Meetings are held on the third Thursday evening of every month, starting at 5.30pm and finishing just before 7.00pm when the Library closes.

What is BookChat?

BookChat is a book discussion group that was started in Cessnock Library in 2001 by a group of interested people from the community in conjunction with Cessnock City Library. BookChat is also active at Kurri Kurri Library.

Who can join BookChat?

BookChat is open to any adult member of the community who is interested in reading and talking about books.

Does it cost anything to join?

BookChat is free, although you may have to contribute something to morning tea occasionally.

Do I need to purchase the books?

The Library will provide some copies of the book for you to borrow; these will come from Cessnock and Kurri Kurri Libraries and also from other libraries.  However, we may not have enough copies for everyone so some people may have to purchase their own copy or share with others.

How long do the meetings go for?

The meetings last for about one and a half to two hours.  After the meeting those interested may go out for lunch - this is up to the group members!

Is BookChat involved in any other activities?

Yes, there are often other activities organised, including movie trips, Melbourne Cup parties and day trips - this is up to the group members!

Some BookChat tips

  • Be honest in your discussion of the book;
  • Bring along at least one question to help generate book discussion;
  • The atmosphere of the group is entirely up to you, the more creative you are the livelier the discussion will be and the more enjoyment you will get out of BookChat.
  • Take notes as you read the book of your favourite passages, key scenes etc, as it is easy to forget things about the book if you don’t take notes;
  • When reading the book don’t focus on whether or not you like the book – instead look to see that you get something out of the book.
