National Parks

Approximately 24 per cent of land within the Cessnock Local Government Area (LGA) is reserved as National Park valued for their scenic, ecological, cultural and aesthetic qualities.  There are also a number of State Forests and other bushland areas.

The National Parks and State Forests located within the LGA (either partly or wholly) include:

  • Corrabare State Forest
  • Heaton State Forest
  • Olney State Forest
  • Pokolbin State Forest
  • Sugarloaf State Conservation Area
  • Watagans National Park
  • Werakata National Park
  • Yengo National Park

Key bushland areas within the LGA maintained by Cessnock City Council include Kitchener Poppethead Reserve, Hunter River Reserve at Greta and the Bimbadeen Lookout at Mount View.


Playgrounds

Cessnock’s 42 playgrounds have fun equipment for kids of all ages. Our inclusive and accessible playgrounds have opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. These playgrounds include:

  • Veteran’s Memorial Park in Aberdare
  • Bridges Hill Park in Cessnock
  • Maybury Peace Park in Weston

Some of our playgrounds are fully fenced providing a safe environment for toddlers and young children to enjoy.

Hire a park

Many of our parks are available to hire for small gatherings through to large corporate events. Fill out an Application for Use of Recreation Facilities form to hire one for your event.

Maintenance

Council carry out scheduled maintenance works on all Council managed parks, gardens, sporting ovals, playgrounds and tourist information bays in the Cessnock LGA.

Activities include mowing, trimming and edging, watering and fertilising, pest and weed control, line marking and installation of goal posts on sporting fields, minor repairs and litter removal.

Playgrounds are inspected on a monthly basis and repairs undertaken as required.
